Websites for businesses in Arua

Arua is the commercial centre of West Nile, close to both the DRC and South Sudan borders, with a trade economy that reaches well beyond Uganda and a significant humanitarian and refugee-response presence.

Cross-border trading partners and international organisations both work at a distance. A supplier or transporter who can be found, verified and contacted online is in a materially stronger position than one who relies on people passing through the town.

Trading across two borders raises a question most Ugandan businesses never face: what language and what currency. Buyers in the Democratic Republic of Congo work in French, and prices quoted only in shillings mean an extra step for everybody. This does not call for translating the whole site, which is expensive and goes stale. It calls for deciding which pages a foreign buyer actually needs - what you supply, your terms, how to reach you - and doing those properly.

West Nile carries one of the largest humanitarian operations in the country, and the agencies running it buy locally and constantly: accommodation, conference space, transport and vehicle hire, fuel, construction, supplies, printing, catering. That spending goes through formal procurement, which means a supplier is checked before being chosen. Publish what a vendor registration needs: your registered name exactly as on the certificate, your TIN, trading licence, physical address, bank details available on request, and a named contact for quotations. Say what capacity you hold - how many rooms, how many vehicles, how much you can deliver in a week. This is the least glamorous page you will write and the one that wins contracts.

Questions from Arua

Our buyers are in South Sudan and DRC. Will they find our site?

If it is built to be found. Search works the same across borders, and traders looking for Ugandan suppliers search in English for exactly what they need. A page naming the goods, the border points you use and your clearing arrangements reaches people you will never meet in person.

We supply humanitarian organisations. What do they check?

Registration, tax compliance, capacity and past performance. Procurement processes are formal, and a supplier they cannot verify online creates work for them. Being easy to verify is often what gets you onto the approved list.

Should our website be in French as well as English?

Only the pages that carry the transaction, and only if you genuinely sell across the border. A French page covering what you supply, your capacity, your terms and your contact details does almost all of the work, and it is maintainable. Translating everything produces a second site that falls out of date and does more harm than no translation at all. Quote in shillings but say whether you accept dollars and at what basis, because that is the practical question. And make sure the phone number you give works on WhatsApp, since that is how cross-border trade is actually conducted.

We want to supply humanitarian organisations. What do they check?

That you exist, that you can deliver, and that paying you is straightforward. Expect requests for your registration certificate, TIN, trading licence, bank details and sometimes references from similar work. Beyond documents they look for capacity: how many units you can supply, how fast, and whether you have done it before at that size. Some ask about safeguarding, insurance or how you treat staff. Put a supplier information page on the site with all of it stated clearly, keep scanned documents ready to attach the same day, and respond to requests for quotation quickly and in the format asked for. In this market the supplier who answers by the deadline, in full, beats the cheaper one who answered late.
